About John Bassette
I have almost 35 years’ experience as a real estate broker in the greater Woodstock Vermont area and neighboring New Hampshire and have owned or managed three successful real estate companies.
I spent my high school years in Quechee VT, where my father, John Bassette (Sr.), owned and operated John Bassette Realtor out of our family’s home. He was ahead of the technology curve and had a fax machine in his office in 1973……the trouble was no one could receive a fax back then! As a teenager, I escorted vacation renters to the 80-100 homes and condominiums my father managed. In the early 80’s I joined the firm when the real estate company was one of the largest real estate firms in the Upper Valley. I cut my teeth in the business by helping second homeowners find their vacation getaways in Quechee Lakes and representing primary homeowners in the surrounding Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. Over three decades, I have become well acquainted with the requirements of second homeowners, vacation home ownership, and investment properties. As a result, I am a skilled advisor in any real estate transaction.
When Buyer Brokerage first appeared in Vermont I was an early adopter, at a time when the majority of other Vermont/New Hampshire agents looked on the practice with distrust. Buyer Brokerage, in which a real estate agent represents the buyer’s interests (and not the seller’s), is common practice now. I was also the primary real estate educator selected by the Upper Valley real estate brokerage community to coach and educate local brokers into the “digital age” when we transitioned from the old, twice a month black and white Multiple Listing Service (MLS) books to a new, computer-driven MLS. That seems like ages ago!
Over the course of my long career in Vermont and New Hampshire real estate, I have successfully guided clients through hundreds of transactions and have seen thousands of Upper Valley homes. I am technically savvy, an innovator, a great listener, and a superb client advocate. I sell properties that run the gamut from über high-end luxury homes to primary homes for the everyday working person. Recent sales include a number of multi-million dollar transactions in the Woodstock area. I hold the nationally recognized Graduate Realtor Institute certification (GRI), the Accredited Buyer Representative designation (ABR) and I am an exceptional trained client-based negotiator. I earned my B.A. in Psychology starting at Middlebury College and finishing at the University of Vermont, with a de-facto minor in Religion, Counseling, and Philosophy.
Personal / Family Bio (for the curious):
I am a fully invested father of nine and my lovely wife Donna-Lee and our family have lived in Hartland, Vermont since 1983. Our children range in age from 14 to 31 (6 boys, 3 girls). The four oldest boys were awarded appointments to the United States Military Academy at West Point and are now officers in the United States Army. Our eldest two daughters are in college (Hillsdale & Cedarville) working towards a nursing degree, a Spanish degree, and a classical education minor, all while becoming the next missionary to Africa. The last three are running up mountains, cross country ski racing in the winter time, and spending time pursuing their studies at home.
I was a member of the United States Ski Team back in the “Dark Ages” of the late 70’s and was the United States National Ski Jumping Champion (1978) and am in the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame. I skied in the Lake Placid Olympics as the lead test jumper to make sure the hills were safe (read DANGEROUS). I was the only one who could handle 50 miles per hour crosswinds in a windblown ski jump that NO ONE should have been jumping on! Yikes! I actively "give back" locally and serve on the Woodstock Ski Runners Board, as a Track Coach at Woodstock Union High School (WUHS) and am on the Race Committee for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, VT100 Ultra-Marathon. I am a big supporter of the WUHS cross country running, track and Nordic ski teams and am involved in my local church (Christ Redeemer Church in Hanover NH).
I cultivate an active Vermont family lifestyle; running, hiking, hunting with the kids, cross-country skiing. I am a skier who "loves speed” and seem to have passed that on to the children. I recently finished the Vermont 50 mile Ultra-Marathon with my daughter Kathryn and am training for the Vermont 100 Ultra-Marathon. Our family has produced some exceptional athletes and scholars who hold various State records and numerous State championships in a variety of sports.
I live the lifestyle many people come to Vermont to enjoy. I mix work and pleasure every day (really they are the same thing for me). I would love the opportunity to help you enjoy all that the Upper Valley has to offer. Give me a call on my cell at 802-280-5977 if you need help finding that perfect Vermont or New Hampshire property.
